In 2021, TIVOLY Spain started the "VIBRATAP" project to develop a new cutting tool using the emerging technique of Vibration Assisted Machining.
In 2022, with the technological support of "TECNALIA Research & Innovation" and the financial support of the Basque Government's "HAZITEK" programme, the effect of vibrations on Duplex stainless steel threading was studied through the use of a special control cycle that applies vibrations to the tool.
The quality of the thread was analysed in terms of roughness and dimensional accuracy.
Further analyses were carried out for different configurations of M10 cutting cores and for an innovative design with two incidence angles.
In addition, tests of two new coatings suitable for the application analysed completed the research.
Also, the study with rolling cores was completed.
The results showed that the vibrations significantly improved the chip breaking effect, which offers an important competitive advantage.
This innovative approach to the threading process may have important implications for the manufacture of high value-added parts.
